Hanson's extended brick range means more choice for architects and builders
Story
Hanson Building Products has extended its 65mm Abbey range with the launch of two new clay bricks. The Abbey Buff Multi and Abbey Red Multi have been designed to complement the existing Abbey Blend.
Architects, specifiers, developers and housebuilders will appreciate the choice and versatility of this extended product range. These bricks are designed for use on a wide variety of projects, from housing and public sector to retail and commercial developments.
Produced at Hanson’s Howley Park factory in West Yorkshire, these bricks conform to the highest quality standard within BS EN 771-1. In addition, they are manufactured to an enhanced tolerance guarantee, adding to the overall quality and long-term performance of the bricks, providing customers with extra reassurance when specifying and using these products.
In keeping with Hanson’s long-term commitment to retain its position as a sustainable business and contribute to sustainable development, all Hanson bricks are now produced at factories certified to ISO 14001. The Howley Park factory, in particular, utilises landfill gas which provides up to 40% of the energy input to the kilns. This additional energy efficiency contributes further to the reduction of the company’s carbon footprint.
The UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of bricks, Hanson offers an unrivalled selection in terms of range, size and shape to suit every application. With over 300 colours and textures available, customers can choose from an extensive choice of buffs, yellows, browns, reds, greys, blacks and blues. Recognising that texture can prove as important as colour, the company offers a full range – from smooth, light textured and heavy textured to tumbled and stock. As an added customer service, Hanson has also developed an innovative brick visualiser to ease the selection process for architects, specifiers, developers and builders.
The attractive new additions to the Abbey range are accompanied by an extensive assortment of special shapes. For more information and/or to request samples, contact Hanson on 08705 258258.

Humidity Transmitter HMT330 from Vaisala features integrated data logging
Story
Vaisala HUMICAP® Humidity and Temperature Transmitter Series HMT330 now offers several new features including a data logging option, Chinese as a new user interface language, the new generation Vaisala HUMICAP® 180 R sensor and a USB connection cable for computers. In addition, the HMT330 has a new display with a white background light for easier reading.
The new data logging option is a module that is slotted into the transmitter. The module has an enhanced memory that can store data of three measured parameters. When logging is fixed at 10 second intervals, data can be stored for as long as 4 years and 5 months. A real-time clock with a battery backup ensures accurate date and time stamps even when no power is supplied to the transmitter. The logging feature does not require any pre-setting; data is ready and available when needed. The stored data can be viewed graphically on the display throughout the logging period, and the user can zoom in and out as necessary. Any period of measured results can be downloaded via a serial interface to a computer.
Vaisala also introduces the new generation of its proven Vaisala HUMICAP® Relative Humidity Sensor, the HUMICAP®180R. This new sensor provides further improved long-term stability and chemical tolerance as well as resistance against various contaminants.
To connect the service port of the HMT330 transmitter to the USB port of a computer, Vaisala now offers a USB-RJ45 Serial Connection Cable. It operates as an RS232 – USB converter at a data transfer rate of 19200 bauds/s.
In addition to the eight existing languages, the graphical display interface now also includes Chinese. Users can select the language on the display menu. With the new white background in the display, contrast is increased and readability is improved.

Swisrail Chosen for the Phoenix Apartments
Story
Alumasc’s M.R. Swisrail Insulated Render System has been chosen for an innovative apartment development in Cherstey, Surrey. This monolithic system is specifically tailored to the needs of lightweight frame construction. It not only achieved the exceptional levels of insulation required but also met the need for a ‘drained system’ around a unique curved tower feature.
Developed by Countryside Properties, the Phoenix Apartments comprise one and two bedroom units. The scheme features four landmark buildings including a cylindrical tower that forms the centre piece. Over 1700m2 of Swisrail was specified by the architects, KDS Associates, because it could offer a highly efficient insulation board that achieved a ‘U’ value of 0.20 W/m2K. The 140mm extruded polystyrene insulation needed to achieve the U value can be used with a drained system, unlike most other products on the market which are limited to 120mm insulation.
NHBC approved Swisrail is based on Swistherm, the principal M.R. Insulated Render System for new building applications. Swisrail incorporates a series of steel rails and channels that provide a 25mm drained cavity between the insulation and the steel frame to comply with NHBC guidelines. Swisrail provided a solution that could be installed quickly and easily around the tower.
The aesthetic benefits of Swisrail were also important to the specifiers. The scheme includes some retail units and a renovated Grade II listed house that provides a striking contrast to the glass and render of the new buildings. Swisrail is a contemporary architectural solution based on lightweight renders with textured finishes, in a wide choice of colours – enabling the architects to select a finish that fulfilled their design brief.
Lightweight M.R. ST Silicone and Mineral top coats are available in rolled or dragged surface textures. The render is highly resistant to impact damage and requires minimal routine maintenance. The choice of insulation materials includes mineral wool for non-combustibility and expanded polystyrene for economy, whilst either mineral wool or cork, when combined with M.R. ST Mineral decorative renders, provide a faÇade solution composed entirely of natural materials.

Daikin Air Conditioning Helps Transform 19th Century Listed Hotel into 21st Century Showpiece
Story
The lovely old Grade II listed Harte and Garter Hotel, superbly located in the centre of historic Windsor, re opened in October after an in depth and highly successful £7.5million refurbishment programme. Dating back to the 19th century, the hotel is rich in high ceilings, attractive cornices and dark wood furnishings and sympathetic restoration has preserved most of its Victorian splendour and heritage, albeit blended now with the style and luxury of a 21st century showpiece.
Its many contemporary additions include Daikin VRV and SkyAir air conditioning, a new and luxurious boutique spa complete with treatment rooms and sauna, new and upgraded bedrooms and bathrooms and extensively refitted restaurant and public areas.
The new air conditioning, installed by Air Cool Engineering Systems Ltd, Stevenage, Herts, comprises three 2 pipe VRV heat pump and six 3 pipe VRV heat recovery systems. Heat recovery air conditioning is supplied to the hotel bedrooms by means of floor standing chassis type fan coil units housed in casings purpose designed to blend with the room decor and to the spa and restaurant via ceiling ducted units. A combination of ceiling cassette and wall mounted units also supply certain of the public areas with heat recovery air conditioning.
Heat pump air conditioning is utilised in the main for the open plan areas such as the ballroom and meeting rooms with Sky Air split systems serving the bar and private dining rooms. Internal design temperature is maintained at 210C on a year round basis.
Heat reclaim ventilation is provided for the kitchen, bar and private dining areas by two Daikin VAM units, which exchange the temperature and humidity of incoming fresh air to match the prevailing indoor conditions, thereby reducing the ventilation cooling and heating loads otherwise placed upon the air conditioning systems.
The air conditioning and heat reclaim ventilation systems are controlled by a Daikin Intelligent controller located in an office off the reception area and connected to wall mounted remote local temperature controllers throughout the hotel
