New light commercial multi system from Daikin

Story

Flexible high efficiency solution for light commercial applications

Daikin Europe N.V. has extended its Sky Air series (20 and 25 kW with a new light commercial multi system (CMSQ. Designed for light commercial multi applications such as shops, restaurants and small offices, the R-410A system is inverter controlled ensuring maximum comfort and high efficiency. It allows up to four indoor units of varying types and sizes to be individually controlled and is extremely quiet. Also, its extended piping length supports flexible outdoor unit placement on walls, roof and indoors.

COP of 4.1 in heating mode and 3.71 in cooling mode

The CMSQ outdoor unit is equipped with an inverter controlled scroll compressor driven by a high efficiency motor. Inverter control ensures constant room temperatures and maximum efficiency, especially in partial load situations – EERs up to 3.71 in cooling mode and COPs to 4.1 in heating mode. A total piping length of 160 metres is supported by a Refnet system for optimum refrigerant flow. The outdoor unit combines a high static pressure of 50 Pa with sound levels as low as 57 dBA in normal operation and down to 45 dBA in night set mode.

Individually controlled indoor units

Two types of indoor units are offered: a Roundflow cassette (FMCQ) and a concealed ceiling unit (FMDQ), both available in a range of capacities from 5 to 12.5 kW in cooling mode. Up to four indoor units can be installed in any combination of capacity and type, with each unit individually controllable via its own infrared or hard-wired remote control. The indoor units operate at near silent sound levels — FMCQ down to 28dBA and FMDQ down to 30 dBA. CMSQ also optionally supports Daikin’s Intelligent Touch Controller and Intelligent Manager control systems.

The FMCQ Roundflow cassette provides comfortable 3600 air discharge with uniform airflow and even temperature distribution. Horizontal air discharge ensures draught free operation and the unit’s 23 different airflow patterns allow installation in corners or small rooms. Optional fresh air intake up to 20% is available and the unit’s decorative panel comes in 2 colours –: white or white with white louvres for better integration in shop and commercial interiors.

The lightweight and compact FMDQ concealed ceiling unit blends with every style of interior and fits flush against the ceiling, with only the air suction and discharge grilles visible. The air discharge grilles are adjustable, allowing uniform temperature distribution even in irregularly shaped rooms.

Multiple applications

CMSQ is designed for applications with multiple rooms/areas that require great flexibility in installation and control. A two floor shop with a back office for example, in which the upper floor can have slightly different temperature settings from the lower floor. Different settings can also be used in the back office. This possibility applies to individually controlled indoor units. Furthermore, the back office system could be switched off when not in use and if the back office is small, the asymmetric combinations enable the exact capacity required to be selected. CMSQ also allows mixing the indoor types (cassettes and ducts) as well as unit capacity classes.

Ability Matrix Fan Coil Units in Landmark Sheffield Commercial Development

Story

Over 130 technologically advanced Matrix Trojan EC fan coil units, manufactured by Ability Projects Ltd, Wimborne, Dorset, have been installed in the recently completed second phase of the striking Castlegate Square, Sheffield, project.

The Matrix EC fan coil system is unique in the UK in that it provides infinitely variable speed control of the whole fan coil unit as well as each fan within it, enabling each air duct to be balanced for air volume through fan speed alone, thus removing the need for costly, noisy volume control dampers and their time consuming installation. Matrix fan coils are also designed to adjust the overall air volume according to room occupancy, thermal demand or a combination of the two.

The Matrix system is fitted with a BACnet open protocol intelligent controller, factory pre wired to the fan coil and complete with dedicated software. Developed specifically for use on Ability Matrix fan coil units, this controller not only incorporates modulating valve control and on coil temperature sensing etc – it also offers system users wireless, lap top access to all fan coil features and settings without needing access to the ceiling void.

The Castlegate Square project is a mixed commercial development, comprising a Travelodge Hotel, retail outlets and some 200,000ft² grade ‘A’ office accommodation, 400,000ft² of it in this second phase, the overall scheme, due for completion in 2010, represents a vital modern business outlet with easy access to the City centre.

The 4 pipe Ability fan coil units, installed by Emcor Engineering Services, Cheadle Heath, Stockport, have nominal capacities of 0.6 to 6.80kW (cooling) and 0.6 to 22.6kW (heating) and are installed in false ceilings throughout the six floors of the second phase 40,000ft² office complex. Specified noise ratings for the units are NR35. All fan coils are fitted with BACnet controls, with ‘free issue actuators wired by Ability and secured inside their electrical enclosures.

BBA and BRE Global Sign Eco-Profiling Agreement

Story

Environmental considerations are weighing ever-heavier in the minds of today’s specifiers, buyers and building owners and manufacturers have been focusing on the environmental aspects of their products as never before.

Unfortunately some claims are more valid than others and the phenomenon of ‘greenwash’ – has developed. The eco-profiling system developed by BRE Global provides a rigorous and consistent approach to assessing the environmental impact of construction materials.

The BBA is delighted to announce that it has signed a licensing arrangement with BRE Global to enable BBA Certificate holders and other manufacturers to seek eco-profiling direct from the BBA and consequently where appropriate listings in The Green Guide.

BBA Chief Executive Greg Cooper states ‘We are naturally anxious to provide this service to our customers as soon as possible but we are equally determined to ensure absolute consistency between our results and those produced by BRE Global. We therefore have a training period for our own staff first using a limited number of real projects before we can consider taking on volume eco-profiling for our extensive client base. We anticipate completing this by early 2009’

The BBA/BRE agreement has been welcomed by the manufacturer base. Jane Thornback, Environmental Policy Advisor at the Construction Products Association, said ‘I am delighted that this new agreement has been reached. This new agreement between BRE and the BBA will increase capacity and shorten the time frame for profiling. More and more companies want to have their products environmentally profiled as they see this as necessary for the market place. To now have multiple licensed users of the extensive life cycle dataset held at BRE is a great step forward’.

Cost effective RO from ELGA Process Water – ELGA Process Water extends maxiRO range

Story

ELGA Process Water has announced two new models in their market-leading maxiRO range of reverse osmosis units. The new models, the maxiRO 14-4000 and maxiRO 14-5000 deliver 4m3/h and 5m3/h respectively and extend the maxiRO range into large commercial and industrial systems.

Like other models in the maxiRO range, the new models use low pressure membranes which remove up to 98% of dissolved inorganics and over 99% of large dissolved organics, colloids and particles whilst low operating pressures – generally below 14bar – keep operating costs to a minimum. Competitively priced to appeal to the commercial and industrial user of boiler make up, cooling and process water, these RO units are self-contained, compact and designed to blend into the modern plant room environment.

Control is by means of a sophisticated microprocessor controller accessed via an HMI style panel which gives a clear display of flow, pressure, water quality and temperature, together with operational status and error messages. The controller provides a volt-free alarm contact and a 4-20mA analogue signal to transmit treated water conductivity to a distributed control system (DCS), Building Management System (BMS) or other PLC based systems. The controller also provides a data-logging facility for trending. Automatic permeate diversion to drain on start-up is standard, to ensure that water quality is achieved and maintained, as is automatic timed re-circulation to avoid membrane fouling during idle periods. The maxiRO units can be supplied with optional antiscalant or sodium bisulphite dosing equipment which simply “plug-and-play” using the standard controller.

All the models can be directly coupled in series to create a twin pass arrangement and can be provided with blending facilities where specific water quality has to be met. Automatic pH monitoring and control is a further option on the larger units.

Megger’s portable cable fault locators pack more power!

Story

Designed specifically to aid rapid, accurate location of cable faults in power systems, thereby cutting downtime and, in distribution installations, costly ‘consumer minutes lost’, cable fault locators in Megger’s new PFL40 range offer a full range of tests from a single compact and easily transportable unit.

Despite their small size, PFL testers perform DC testing at up to 40kV and impulse testing with energies up to 2,000J, a level of performance that is unmatched by any other portable test set currently available.

The latest additions to Megger’s established range of cable fault locators, which embody many of the patents granted to the company in this field, the new PFL40 units offer all of the test facilities needed for cable testing, cable fault diagnosis, pre-location of cable faults, fault conditioning and pin-point location of faults. Users therefore have immediate access to all of the resources needed to deal swiftly with even the most intransigent of cable faults.

PFL40 cable fault locators feature a high-voltage DC test set, complemented by a time domain reflectometer (TDR). The DC test set can be used to prove the integrity of cable networks or to confirm faults at voltages up to 40kV and currents up to 25mA. An operator selectable overcurrent trip is incorporated to protect the system under test in the event of a cable breakdown.

Fault pre-location can be achieved using the TDR in standard pulse echo mode, or by the arc reflection, impulse current or voltage decay methods. Acoustic pinpoint fault location, using the PFL40’s high voltage, high-energy surge generator, is also supported.

For intermittent or unstable faults, PFL40 testers offer a choice of fault conditioning features. In proof/burn mode, after cable breakdown has occurred, the testers apply a high current that stabilises the fault, making it much easier to locate. Alternatively, the arc reflection method can be used to establish a temporary bridge to earth, enabling standard pulse echo location techniques to be used.
