Urbis Turns a Dublin Canal Bridge into a Beacon of Light
Story
The La Touché Bridge in the Portobello area of Dublin, spans the famous Grand Canal. The council refurbished the two original cast twisted columns lighting the bridge deck. Urbis then supplied two of their Albany lanterns with micro-reflectors.
To create a focal point, Urbis floodlit the underside of the bridge using four carefully positioned Neos floodlights.
This scheme is part of a large project for both of Dublin’s canals, the walkways are now lit with Urbis’ Albany lanterns. These are mounted on plain columns and Stirrup brackets, and are fitted with 150W CDM-T lamps. They provide a white light source that make the pathways feel safer at night.

XL Air Curtain
Story
JS Air Curtains is launching the most powerful industrial air curtain available in the UK, for use on warehouse and factory doorways up to 7m high. The Windbox XL has a massive airflow of up to 21,000m3/h. This very high capacity enables it to be used on large loading bay or industrial doorways to create an effective seal that prevents cold air from entering or refrigerated air from escaping. Using ambient air keeps energy costs right down but, where required, heating up to 93kW is available as well.
By installing an air curtain on external doorways the internal temperature of a building can be maintained while the door is open, saving on heating or refrigeration costs. This can create a more comfortable environment for staff or a more consistent environment for temperature sensitive produce. Using air curtains on internal doorways removes the need for plastic slats or fast acting roller doors, whilst improving access and visibility.
The Windbox XL is available in ½m lengths from a 1m unit to a 3m unit. It can be mounted horizontally above a doorway up to 7m high or vertically at the sides of an entrance up to 14m wide (when positioning units on both sides).
Its casing is zinc plated steel, finished in structural epoxy-polyester RAL 9016 (white) as standard. Any other RAL colour or stainless steel construction is also available on request.
The air curtain has a wall-mounted five speed controller, with 20m of plug and play RJ45 cable for easy installation, or can be controlled via BMS. It incorporates low noise centrifugal double inlet fans driven by an external rotor motor with built-in thermal protection. A micro-perforated inlet grille acts as an air filter to stop airborne debris from entering the unit and adjustable vanes on the air outlets allow the airflow to be directed from 0 to 15º, for creating an optimum seal across an entrance.
The Windbox XL is available with electrical heating, water heated coils or in air only models.

Emergency lighting in Paradise
Story
In what is believed to be the largest emergency lighting installation in Europe with centralised monitoring and testing facilities, Ventilux has supplied emergency luminaires, central battery supplies and a central test and monitoring system, for the Paradise Project in Liverpool. The massive development by Grosvenor comprises 30 major buildings, including banks, department stores, hotels and residential accommodation, in 42 acres between Liverpool City Centre and the Albert Dock.
Ventilux is supplying landlords? emergency lighting for the majority of the site. This includes both self-contained luminaires and central battery systems. The majority of the fittings are fed by central battery supplies ranging from 8kVA to 40kVA. All the emergency luminaires incorporate a unique test and monitoring facility that is linked back to the central control room.
A key feature of the emergency lighting installation is the Ventilux Netcom 5 xp automatic test and monitoring system. This automatically carries out the daily checks and monthly, six-monthly and annual tests required for emergency lighting, logging the results and alerting the operators to any luminaires that need attention. The system is capable of monitoring up to 25,300 emergency luminaires. A monitoring device in each luminaire monitors the lamp, battery and inverter and automatically conducts the specified tests.
The system is particularly easy to use because the main control panel uses a conventional PC and Windows technology. Each luminaire has a unique address. The control panel can generate reports on the entire system or on individual luminaires. It can also list luminaires requiring attention and alert operators on case of critical faults.
Many of the emergency luminaires used in the Paradise Project are Concord Marlin units which have been adapted and re-tested by Ventilux for use with the Netcom 5 xp System. This ability to adapt emergency luminaires from other manufacturers for use with the system is a significant feature of the Ventilux offering. The luminaires are modified in Ventilux? own workshops and re-tested to ICEL, BS and International standards.
The Paradise Project also includes a number of Ventilux? own luminaires including its slim Eclipse Dualis double-sided ?Exit? signs and its elegant ?Scout? twin spot units.
Ventilux worked closely with the Infrastructure and Building Service Engineers ? WSP Group ? to produce appropriate solutions to the special needs of the project. In addition to the centralised monitoring and testing facility, WSP was looking for energy saving measures and fail-safe operation. Special switching arrangements were developed to ensure safety combined with energy-efficiency at times of low activity.
The Paradise Project is one of the most ambitious city redevelopment schemes in progress. It is a retail-led mixed-use development due for completion during Liverpool?s reign as European Capital of Culture 2008. It will include two landmark stores ? a 240,000 sq ft John Lewis and 185,000 sq ft Debenhams ? plus 160 other shops, two major hotels, a transport interchange, 634 homes and parking for 3,000 cars. Laing O?Rourke is the main contractor for the West section with Crown House engineering responsible for M&E services installation. Balfour Beatty is main contractor for the East section and Balfour Kilpatrick is M&E services contractor. The developer is Grosvenor.
The Paradise Project is the latest in a series of high-profile projects for which Ventilux has supplied emergency lighting systems. These include the Athens Concert Hall, Abbey National House in Glasgow and Vauxhall Motors in Ellesmere Port.
Ventilux has its headquarters and factory in Dun Laughaire, Southern Ireland and UK sales, distribution and luminaire conversion facilities in Knowsley, Merseyside. The company reinvests 4% of turnover in research and development and, since its formation in 1986, has grown to become one of the largest independent emergency lighting manufacturers in Europe and the leading supplier in Southern Ireland.

TAC launches flexible and affordable access control at IFSEC 2007
Story
Location ? Ashby-de-la-Zouch, July 2007. Security specialist TAC is set to launch an efficient and flexible new access controller at IFSEC in May. The Intelli-M PoE Integrated I/P Door Controller provides access control and alarm services with the key benefit of being powered through an Ethernet cable.
The small size and simple mounting positions makes the Intelli-M easy and affordable to install, while its ability to run autonomously reduces the risk of the controller being affected by wider system or component failure. Further, Intelli-M integrates seamlessly with TAC?s existing and extensive range of network video recorders.
Intelli-M is accompanied by Supervisor Plus software ? a fully scaleable management tool, suitable for small and large installations alike. It will control door locks and contacts and a card reader or keypad, and includes its own independent warning buzzer and infra-red tamper.
Matt Coulson, security specialist at TAC, said: ?The sheer flexibility and ease of use are the main benefits of the Intelli-M system ? we have crammed the features of physically much larger controllers into a small unit.
?The embedded web server, ethernet power source and ability to power other associated equipment means there can be savings on the costs of cabling and installation.?
TAC is exhibiting on stand 11063 in hall 6. Experts will be on hand to discuss any aspects of Intelli-M or any products in TAC?s security range.
Product facts and figures:
Power over Ethernet: This revolutionary technology allows users to plug Intelli-M?s eIDC into any existing Ethernet Network using standard CAT 5 or CAT 6 cable to take advantage of running power and data on a single cable for increased efficiency.
Powers Peripherals: Intelli-M?s eIDC delivers up to 12 VDC @ 1 A of power for all door hardware including lock and readers, reducing cabling costs and installation time.
Native IP Connectivity: There is no need for bridges or media connectors since IP technology is built into every eIDC unit. Additionally, every eIDC supports DHCP for automatic IP addressing. There is no need for dip switches or cumbersome system settings.
Embedded Web Server: Using the embedded Web server allows for easy ommissioning of the Intelli-M system. It also eliminates the need for software in stand-alone, single-door systems.
Peer-to-Peer Communications: Intelli-M?s eIDC operates in a true peer-to-peer environment, which allows the controllers to continue to communicate even if connection to a server is interrupted.

Electro-Services Expansion Sparks Record £1.2 Million Kubota Minis Order
Story
Electro-Services Ltd, a major plant hirer to the utility sector, has added mini excavators to its growing roster of specialist equipment with an investment of £1.2 million in market leading Kubota machines.
It is one of the largest single orders received by Kubota so far this year and is part of Electro-Services' drive to meet the demands of an ever-expanding utility sector.
The order for nearly 80 Kubota minis, across the weight range from 1.5 to 8 tonnes, includes 8 tonne KX-080 and 3 tonne KX61-3 machines, together with the new 1.6 tonne U17-3 model and other 2.5 tonne U25-3 and 5 tonne U50-3 zero tail swing machines.
It represents the largest slice of a total £1.7 million investment in new plant – the largest made by Electro-Services – as it celebrates its 21st anniversary.
The company is also buying 55 2.5 and 3.5 tonne trailers to deliver the Kubota minis to customers, as well as 25 Terex dumpers including 1 tonne high lift, 3 tonne swivel, 6 tonne swivel and 9 tonne straight models.
All of the mini excavators, which incorporate Kubota's unique key-based 'ANTI-THEFT' system, as standard equipment, are being supplied with a full range of buckets by Kubota dealer Shellplant, of Earls Barton, Northampton. The machines will also be equipped with Atlas Copco hydraulic breakers.
Said Electro-Services' Sales Director Chris James: “Adding mini excavators to our hire offering is a natural bolt-on as far as our utility customers are concerned. We chose Kubota because they are the outright market leaders.”
“Despite the current economic climate I am more confident about these purchases than any other that we have made. We pride ourselves in supplying the highest quality equipment, which is why we chose the Kubota and Terex brands.”
“Although they are both near the top end for us in purchase price, I feel their known quality and reliability amply justifies the investment cost and reinforces our commitment to providing our clients with the very best plant. A good 50% of the minis are already booked out to our utility clients, and we shall also be looking at the housing and construction hire markets.”
Said Shellplant's Julian Payne: “We are pleased that Electro-Services chose us for one of the largest single purchases of Kubota minis to be made in the UK so far this year. It’s extremely satisfying to partner such a successful company as they expand their business in such a big way during their 21st year of trading.”
