Capturing the castle

Story

Kenilworth is the largest ruined castle in England, and the conservation of various parts has been an extensive task for English Heritage over the years. As with any project involving a historical building, aesthetics, and safeguarding as much of the site as possible in its original state, is paramount. This is why, when it came to finding an unobtrusive CCTV monitoring system, English Heritage turned to Chubb.

Alan Capewell, English Heritage Technical Manager for the West Midlands Region, explains: ?We have worked with Chubb Electronic Security on a number of projects where the nature of the historic site has demanded a sensitive and bespoke security solution.

?In this particular instance, we were setting up an exhibition on one floor of the Gate House and, due to the valuable nature of the exhibits which include precious tapestries and original letters to Queen Elizabeth I who visited Kenilworth in 1575, we wanted to be able to monitor and keep it under surveillance from the main site.?

The challenge was to install five CCTV cameras and find a way to relay the images to the new visitor centre on the other side of the site without digging up or disturbing any of the archaeologically sensitive ground around the Gate House to lay cables.

Tony Skelton of Chubb Electronic Security describes the task: ?We needed to find a way to transmit the live images from the cameras across the site, which was also on the other side of the tree line. Several other suppliers had said that it couldn?t be done but, knowing how important it was not to disrupt the site, we were determined to find a solution.

?It was borderline case but we devised a way of using radio and microwave technology to create a videolink and transmit the live CCTV images wirelessly so that they can be viewed and monitored in the visitor centre.?

Alan Capewell continues: ?We are delighted with the solution which, not only ensures that the historical integrity of the site is retained, but also gives us peace of mind to be able to manage the security of this exhibition in real time. So far we have not had any trouble with visitors to the Gate House, but with such valuable items in there, theft and vandalism are always a risk.?

Chubb Electronic Security has worked on several bespoke projects for the English Heritage. Another recent success was the installation a tailor-made infra-red CCTV system in order to be able to monitor the bats hibernating within the roof space of the Visitor Centre at Witley Court, Worcestershire.

Sentinel Launches Rapid-Dose

Story

-the easy way to add cleaner and system treatment to domestic heating systems-

Leading European water treatment specialist Sentinel has launched Sentinel Rapid-Dose. This revolutionary approach to domestic water treatment utilising a new dosing system to make water treatment easier and less expensive, comes in a recyclable, pressurised canister pre-filled with Sentinel chemical water treatment product – initially the familiar X100 central heating inhibitor and protector, X200 noise reducer, X400 system sludge remover and cleaner and the popular and highly effective Leak Sealer – that can be used to dose any indirect central heating system in seconds.

Rapid-Dose’s novel system is designed to make the addition of water treatment chemicals quick and easy, soon restoring system efficiency to older systems and maintaining the efficiency of new ones, minimising CO2 emissions in the process.

The contents of a Sentinel Rapid-Dose canister are under pressure – the propellant is simply compressed air, so no ‘nasties’ are emitted when the canister is activated – the contents are discharged in, on average around thirty seconds and one 400ml can is sufficient to dose a normal domestic heating system.

It’s quick, mess-free, simple to use and the can is recyclable. A compelling set of reasons to try Sentinel Rapid-Dose!

In addition, there’s no need to draw off water, release system pressure – unless the system is at above 2.3 bar – or wait for the system to cool – and the contents are the same fully proven Sentinel formulations you’ve been working with previously in the liquid or concentrate form of the product, so you can be confident that Sentinel Rapid-Dose will do the job effectively.

To apply Sentinel Rapid-Dose into a heating system, you simply need one of the easy-to-use re-usable connector kits available from your merchant – either a Filling Loop Adaptor, a Radiator Dosing Point kit or a Vent Pin Adaptor Set. You can also purchase a Universal Dosing Tool Kit which includes all these individual options if you prefer and in pre-launch installer research, nearly every installer who saw the ‘kit’ wanted one to add to his toolbox!

Sentinel’s John Lynch says this is ‘the’ answer for installers looking for a quick and simple answer to chemical water treatment in domestic heating systems: “Sentinel Rapid-Dose offers all the benefits that installers have been asking us for and it provides them with a simple, clean and very quick solution. In pre-launch tests it’s ticked all the boxes.”

Sentinel Rapid-Dose is available from your local merchant from 1st June 2008.

Warmafloor Fly into the Lead, at the Wing Assembly Facility

Story

In what is claimed to be the country's largest ever underfloor heating installation, Warmafloor (GB) has completed a project calling for some 60 kilometres of pipe for the Airbus, in its new Aerostructures Assembly and Manufacturing Centre known as the “West Factory”, in Broughton, North Wales. The West Factory is being used to assemble the wings of the new Airbus A380 555 seater double-decker aircraft as well as other manufacturing activities.

Underfloor heating was considered to be the natural choice for this part of the assembly area, providing a significantly more cost effective solution than the more traditional heating systems.

The installation was designed supplied and installed by Warmafloor using all their in house expertise to provide the complete package. The system uses 20 mm polybutylene pipe manufactured in the UK especially for Warmafloor. The pipes are laid in each of the six equipping bays with each bay having 10 heating zones.

The underfloor heating manifolds were specifically manufactured for this project. Unlike the traditional system of a flow and return manifold, located vertically above each other, Warmafloor had to construct a system were the manifolds were fixed side by side. This was designed to achieve the most effective layout for the underfloor heating pipework.

Due to the location of the manifolds and the underfloor heating pipe connections, the pipework had to be fed through pre cast holes within the trench, then into the desired bays. Each hole and manifold location had to be coordinated precisely, using our design team we produced the exact detailed drawings required.

The zonal design enables heat to be concentrated in those parts of the building being used for production at any one time. Despite the massive scale of the building, ambient temperatures of 18 degrees C in the depths of winter by inputting water into the heating grid at 50 degrees C, providing an energy saving over alternative heating methods of some 50%.

“The sheer size of the development represented a significant challenge”. Says Mike Cooke of Mechanical & Electrical services contractors Haden Young. “However, the design and installation skills of Warmafloor, combined with the benefits of under floor heating to enabled the fast track programme to be completed ready on time.”
