Mitsubishi Electric used the RAC & H&V ‘09 Exhibitions (24-26 February, NEC) to showcase the latest advances to the company’s range of heating, cooling and ventilation equipment
Story
This includes the new City Multi and Mr Slim Zubadan systems, which use a unique flash injection circuit to allow the condensers to continue delivering full heating capacity at outdoor temperatures as low as -15ºC and increases the guaranteed operating range down to -25ºC.
“We are unlikely to see such extreme temperatures in the UK but traditional outdoor units can sometimes lose as much as 30 per cent of their capacity at temperatures of -5ºC and below, which was what much of the country was facing only a few weeks ago,” explained Philip Ord, Product Marketing Manager for the company’s comprehensive range of air conditioning products.
The operational capacity of all standard models decreases to some degree when it gets colder outside because a lower evaporation temperature is required. This leads to a decrease in the compressor speed, to avoid overheating, and a decrease in the amount of refrigerant in circulation.
“This unique new system optimises refrigerant flow in low ambient conditions by bypassing some of the refrigerant to the compressor through a flash injection circuit to maximise the heating efficiency and increase the heating range,” added Ord.
Zubadan boasts a super-quick start up and breaks between defrost of up to two or even three times longer than normal. It is available in a variety of configurations across the Mr Slim and City Multi line up.
Also displayed at Mitsubishi Electric’s double stand – which straddled both the RAC and the H&V Shows – was the advanced AG150 controller, the new WR2, WY ground source heat pump system and the unique PWFY water heating system which uses advanced heat pump technology to provide a building’s hot water in place of a traditional boiler – by taking excess heat from the air conditioning to reduce overall energy consumption.
The company also showed off its new range of Photovoltaic (PV) power generating products for both residential and commercial applications and a new range of heat recovery ventilation units for the residential market, in addition to demonstrating the latest developments to the award-winning Ecodan® air source heat pump range.
“We are continuing to highlight the most advanced and energy efficient products available because we know that in the current economic downturn, businesses are looking for savings in all areas and particularly in energy costs,” added Ord.
“We are confident that by pushing the energy efficiency agenda, we will continue to demonstrate our worth to customers and help ensure that the industry not only survives the current downturn but also has an essential role to play in the future.”

Crittall Windows in fashion with Burberry
Story
The new headquarters of the Burberry Group has been purpose designed to house the organisation’s workforce and operations at Horseferry House in Westminster. And to complement the customised individual interior of the 160,000sq ft eight storey building, Crittall Windows have been installed.
The building was originally built in the 1930s and following its transformation, boasts cutting edge showrooms and a modern, contemporary office space which retain some of the original architectural features. The windows were installed as a like for like replacement scheme to fit in with planning schedules for the Westminster area, and Crittall W20 profiles were specified. Additionally, the company also supplied glazed steel screens for the interior in keeping with the aim of the refurbishment to create light and a modern working office environment. This is the first time that all of Burberry’s employees are housed together under the same roof.
The internal steel glazed screens were an integral part of the interior design scheme, with the original lightwells transformed into dynamic day lit circulation spaces, made active by the incorporation of steel framed bridge links connecting the two halves of the building. Says John Pyatt, managing director of Crittall: “The use of the screens opens up the space as intended, allowing natural daylight to be part of the interior lighting scheme .Externally, the replacement windows, in Burberry Brown match the interior and comply with all planning requirements by the local authority. We matched the small pane detail with the W20 profiles, which offer very narrow sightlines that do not detract from the beauty of the original architecture and style of Horseferry House.”
The building is now complete and with Crittall glazing featuring both inside and out, presents a fitting and contemporary home for the world-renowned Burberry name which makes the most of natural light for an ideal working environment.

Tradition Meets Innovation At Coppull Mill
Story
Coppull Mill, former cotton spinning mill and now home to numerous small businesses, has been given a makeover. As part of the cosmetic enhancement, Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss coating has been used extensively throughout this landmark building in the heart of Lancashire.
The enormous mill was originally opened in 1906 and became an iconic structure churning out the cotton for which Coppull became renowned. Built in the art nouveau style with a distinctive tower and dome, it was a masterpiece of the architecture of the time and following the demise of the cotton industry, it took on a new lease of life as home to a number of small thriving businesses under the banners of the Coppull Enterprise Centre, owned by Bizspace.
Lea Hough and Co. Chartered Surveyors were tasked with restoring and repairing both the exterior and the interior of the mill and this included over 500 windows that grace the building. The company worked with Bolton based main contractor, Craftwork Construction Limited, and as Paul Dignan of Lea Hough explains, the transformation included both replacing and repairing the existing timber units, which were all finished using the Rubbol XD Gloss coating from Sikkens.
“This was a major cosmetic exercise to improve the appearance and weathertightness of the old building,” he comments. “All of the windows received treatment in one way or another and we specified the Sikkens XD Gloss to create a uniform finish that also met with the rigorous criteria of the conservation officers at Chorley Council.” Being a Grade 2 Listed building, the window repair and replacement had to be like for like. Each window was primed with Sikkens Onol Primer, then finished with two coats of Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss in white for maximum protection to the timber and for high aesthetic appeal.
Rubbol XD offers the same application benefits as alkyd based paints but achieves significantly higher performance in terms of colour retention, sheen and durability- typically 8 to 10 years before maintenance is required – and for a building the size of Coppull Mill, eliminating the costs associated with maintaining and repairing windows over a decade, equates to a significant saving.
Rubboll XD is fully compliant with 2010 EU legislation standards, which set limitations for VOC content of coatings.

Add-on earth leakage protection for MCCBs and MCBs…
Story
A new range of earth leakage relays and current transformers has been introduced by Eaton for use with moulded-case circuit-breakers and miniature circuit-breakers in three-phase and single phase applications. A unit with adjustable sensitivity and time delay facilities offers particular flexibility to specifiers and installers.
The earth-leakage relays are DIN rail mounted and operate in conjunction with core-balance current transformers. They control the circuit-breaker operation through a shunt trip or undervoltage release. Operational status is indicated by green and red LEDs which indicate not only whether the mains is on and the breaker has tripped but also whether there is an earth leakage current flowing which is insufficient to trip the device. Leakage currents of 25 50%, 50-75% or 75-100% of the trip setting are indicated.
The adjustable relay is only 36mm (two modules) wide. It offers seven different sensitivity settings from 30mA to 5A, and seven delay settings from instantaneous (0.02s) to 5s. The cover can be sealed to prevent tampering with the setting but the test and reset functions can be operated without breaking the seal. Two fixed trip relays are also included in the range covering two of the most popular requirements; these have 30mA and 300mA trip ratings and instantaneous operation. All units are designed and tested to IEC 61008-1.
The current transformers are available in sizes and shapes to cover a wide range of cable ratings and sizes. Ring-shaped units are offered in seven sizes with internal diameters from 20mm to 210mm and units with rectangular apertures are available in four sizes up to 200 x 500mm.
In addition to general applications, the new earth leakage relays will be particularly suited to applications in panelboards where the configuration can make it difficult to fit an MCCB with integral earth leakage protection or where a clip-on earth leakage module is fitted to the base of the MCCB. The rail-mounted earth leakage relays can be installed elsewhere in the panelboard or in a separate enclosure alongside. Similarly the CTs can be installed in a convenient location within the panelboard or in an adjacent cable box.
The new earth leakage relays join Eaton’s extensive range of circuit protection and control devices. These include MCBs with a short-circuit breaking capacity of 15kA as well as the more conventional 6kA and 10kA devices. The range of RCCBs and RCBOs includes a unique RCBO with a field-fittable RCD ‘pod’ that allows numerous different combinations of overcurrent rating and sensitivity to be achieved in a single 18mm module. Eaton’s modern Series G range of moulded-case circuit-breakers is a truly global design, independently tested by KEMA to International standards.
