Coppull Mill, former cotton spinning mill and now home to numerous small businesses, has been given a makeover. As part of the cosmetic enhancement, Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss coating has been used extensively throughout this landmark building in the heart of Lancashire.
The enormous mill was originally opened in 1906 and became an iconic structure churning out the cotton for which Coppull became renowned. Built in the art nouveau style with a distinctive tower and dome, it was a masterpiece of the architecture of the time and following the demise of the cotton industry, it took on a new lease of life as home to a number of small thriving businesses under the banners of the Coppull Enterprise Centre, owned by Bizspace.
Lea Hough and Co. Chartered Surveyors were tasked with restoring and repairing both the exterior and the interior of the mill and this included over 500 windows that grace the building. The company worked with Bolton based main contractor, Craftwork Construction Limited, and as Paul Dignan of Lea Hough explains, the transformation included both replacing and repairing the existing timber units, which were all finished using the Rubbol XD Gloss coating from Sikkens.
“This was a major cosmetic exercise to improve the appearance and weathertightness of the old building,” he comments. “All of the windows received treatment in one way or another and we specified the Sikkens XD Gloss to create a uniform finish that also met with the rigorous criteria of the conservation officers at Chorley Council.” Being a Grade 2 Listed building, the window repair and replacement had to be like for like. Each window was primed with Sikkens Onol Primer, then finished with two coats of Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss in white for maximum protection to the timber and for high aesthetic appeal.
Rubbol XD offers the same application benefits as alkyd based paints but achieves significantly higher performance in terms of colour retention, sheen and durability- typically 8 to 10 years before maintenance is required – and for a building the size of Coppull Mill, eliminating the costs associated with maintaining and repairing windows over a decade, equates to a significant saving.
Rubboll XD is fully compliant with 2010 EU legislation standards, which set limitations for VOC content of coatings.
